Glance
into the past
Mr. John Abbott
died at his home in Naples on Monday at the advanced age of 83 years. Mr. Abbott was born in the county of York,
England, where he was engaged for some time in the manufacture and sale of
boots and shoes. Being persecuted and
ostracised in his native land for his liberal ideas he removed to this country
in the year 1835, locating near Lynnville, where he bought a farm and at the
same time plied the trade he had followed abroad.
In 1847 he
removed to Naples, where he has ever since resided. He has ever been an upright, honorable citizen, generous to all
who have called on him. He gave freely
of his money to the families of soldiers during the war and has ever tried to
act from lofty motives. His death
causes another vacancy in the ranks of the noble pioneers, who have done so
much to develop our country.
